The works of Primo Levi were first published in Portugal as late as 1988, when If This is a Man / Se isto è um homem was published by Teorema, The Periodic Table / O sistema periòdico by Gradiva (which specialized in books uniting literature and the exact sciences), and If Not Now, When? / Se não agora, quando? by Dom Quixote. Since then, only two other books by Primo Levi were published – a collection entitled The Duty of Memory / O dever de memoria (Civilização e Contexto, 1997) and The Truce / A trégua (Teorema, 2004). If This is a Man / Se isto è um homem was then republished in 2002 in Mil Folhas, a series of twentieth-century classics connected with the newspaper Pùblico. Se isto è um homem was published by Editorial Teorema with the support of the Italian Institute of Culture in Portugal, then directed by Antonio Tabucchi.

In Brazil,1988 was also the first year when one of Levi’s works was published – If This is a Man / È isto um homem? (Rocco). His books often appear with titles different from those in Portugal. If This is a Man was followed by The Drowned and the Saved / Os afogados e os sobreviventes (Paz e Terra, 1990), which is subtitled Crimes, Punishments, Pity, the Unpunished / Os delitos, os castigos, as penas, as impunidades, The Periodic Table / A tabela periodica (Relume Dumarà, 1994), The Truce / A trègua (Companhia das Letras, 1997) and If Not Now, When? / Se não agora, quando? (Companhia das Letras, 1999). There is no one leading publisher for Levi's works in Brazil, but more recently in 2005 the Companhia das Letras published 71 Short Stories by Primo Levi / 71 contos de Primo Levi, a rather complete collection taken from Lilít, Storie naturali and Vizio di forma, which was reprinted in 2007.
