Fourth International Conference on Jewish Italian Literature: “Jewish migration: voices of the Diaspora”. Istambul, 23-27 June 2010

    From June 23 to June 27, Istambul hosted the fourth of a series of meetings, organized by a group of researchers from different countries, among them Netherlands, Italy, Canada, Poland and Australia.

    The three prevuious meeting took place in Utrecht, 2006 (“Contemporary Jewish Writers in Italy: a Generational Approach.”), in Varvavia, 2007 ( “Italian Jewish Literature. Language and. Memory of the Shoah”) and Rome, 2008 (“Collective and Private Memory: the Shoah as social politics”).

    The symposium, as the previous ones, has been organized by two scholars who live in Netherlands: Raniero Speelman and Monica Jansen, from the University of Utrecht, with the collaboration of Professor Nevin Őzkan from the University of Ankara and a group or Italianist from Turkey.

    Spellman published many works based on the figure of Primo Levi (his last volume, the collaction of essays Primo Levi as a storyteller [Primo Levi narratore di storie] has been printed in Ankara in 2010, while, Őzkan, has tranlated in Turkish If Not Now, When? [Se non ora, quando?].

    Many scholars participated in the event, among them Sophie Nezri-Dufour, from France, and Mirna Cicioni, Italo-Australian. Two presentations focused specifically on the author from Turin: Cicioni spoke about the f recontextualization of Levi’s excerpts and declarations in Australian politics and literature in australia, while Ilhan Karasubası, from Turkey, explained which of Levi’s works have been translated in Turkey, who are the reades and the keys used to interpret these books.
