The British essayist and university professor was author of foundamental works, such as The Burden of Responsibility; he founded and animated for several years the Remarque Institute at the New York University.

The historian Tony Judt has dead in New York last 6 August at 62 from the complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). He had been suffering from this illness for two years, and in his last months was only able to breathe with the help of a machinery. He had himself described A.L.S., in an essay appeared in January «The New York Review of Books», as a «progressive imprisonment without parole».
Tony Judt was born in London in 1948 from a family of Jewish origins. He studied in Cambridge and in Paris, but subsequently he taught mainly in the United States. In 1995 he was among the co-founders of the Remarque Institute at the New York University, which he animated for several years. In 2005 he published a book which was both monumental and fundamental, Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945. Anyway, it is the title of a previous book of his, The Burden of Responsibility (1998), that conveys the whole profile of Judt as a scholar and a public figure. Judt has been an unprejudiced and balanced thinker, endowed with an effective and elegant style in writing – a person with a unique disposition for dialogue, and with a strikingly wide vision of particular and general issues. Such an amount of talents has earned him both admiration and attacks, expecially aroused by his ideas about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The International Primo Levi Studies Center wants to remember Tony Judt as an acute and passionate reader of the writer of If This Is a Man, to which he dedicated in 1999 the essay The Elementary Truths of Primo Levi, now collected in his last book Reappraisals. Reflections on the Forgotten Twentieth Century.
