Primo Levi rediscovered his Jewish roots under the hard knocks of the racial laws imposed by Fascism in 1938. Then, because he was a Jew, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he made another discovery, the discovery of Eastern Jewry, one that was so very different than that of his own Piedmontese ancestors. From then on he paid constant attention in his works to what was happening to the Jewish people. Readers of Levi should get to know his way of handling the tradition of the fathers and inquire how this influenced his vision of the world and writings. Doing this, they will be better able to grasp the wealth of his thought fully.
