Throughout his life, Alex Langer worked to promote coexistence between German-, Italian-, and Ladin-speaking people in his homeland, South Tyrol. He played a leading role in the events of 1968. From the 1980s onwards, he was one of the leading figures in the environmental movement in Italy and Europe. He fought with all his strength and in the name of nonviolence against the war in the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. In his daily practice, both inside and outside institutions, he understood politics as the art of coexistence.
