On January 23, 2026, at the Liceo Classico Vittorio Alfieri in Turin, there will be a presentation and analysis of the book Svegliarsi adulti. Vita di Sandro Delmastro, partigiano e amico di Primo Levi (Einaudi ed., 2025) with author Roberta Mori, in conversation with historian Aldo Salassa.
The author, Roberta Mori (Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi di Torino), will discuss the book with historian Aldo Salassa (Novecento.org, Istoreto).
The meeting is aimed at high school students and anyone interested in a historical and biographical investigation into Delmastro's life, shedding light on the man behind the literary myth.
Who was Sandro Delmastro (Turin, September 7, 1917 - Cuneo, April 3, 1944)?
Certainly a friend of Primo Levi, but also a former student of the Regio Liceo-Ginnasio Vittorio Alfieri. He was a climber and then a partisan leader, killed by the fascists. But Sandro is also and above all etched in the minds of readers as the unforgettable protagonist of the story Ferro in Levi's Il sistema periodico: "Vedere Sandro in montagna riconciliava col mondo, e faceva dimenticare l’incubo che gravava sull’Europa. Era il suo luogo, quello per cui era fatto, come le marmotte di cui imitava il fischio e il grifo: in montagna diventava felice, di una felicità silenziosa e contagiosa, come una luce che si accenda. Suscitava in me una comunione nuova con la terra e il cielo, in cui confluivano il mio bisogno di libertà, la pienezza delle forze, e la fame di capire le cose che mi avevano spinto alla chimica.”.
