On 3 December 2025, the Sala Zuccari of the Senate of the Republic will host the ceremony for the presentation of the Primo Levi Award. The prize will be awarded to Professor Jean-Marie Lehn jointly by Società Chimica Italiana (SCI), Società Chimica Tedesca (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, GDCh) and Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi.
The award celebrates Professor Lehn's role as an advocate for the transnational nature of science and the pan-European scientific cooperation in the international chemistry community.
The Primo Levi Award was instituted in 2017 by the GDCh, the SCI and Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi. The award celebrates chemists and scientists who have distinguished themselves through the excellence of their research and their significant contributions to humanity, both in the defence of human rights and in raising awareness of the vital role of science in achieving fair, inclusive and sustainable global progress.
Professor Jean-Marie Lehn has consistently demonstrated the power of science as a fundamental force in promoting European scientific cohesion and transnational cooperation in the post-Cold War era. His contribution was instrumental in the creation of Chemistry Europe, the joint European publishing launched with the first publication of the journal «Chemistry: A European Journal». Furthermore, through his leadership at the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD), Professor Lehn has significantly promoted the chemical sciences for sustainable development, particularly in emerging countries.
His fundamental belief that “Science is a vehicle for peace, development, and progress. It is universal. It should be shared universally” aligns perfectly with Primo Levi's ethical legacy and underscores Professor Lehn's commitment to human values and scientific integrity, which make him worthy of this prestigious award.
